* Daltrey never got his wish. The man
who once sang “I hope I die before I
get old” turns 50 next month.

1 “I’m surprised I’m still here with the
’ lifestyle we used to lead,” said
Daltrey, former lead singer of The
Who.

Daltrey will perform with the
J uilliard Orchestra in “Daltrey Sings
Townshend” at Carnegie Hall in New
York on Feb. 23 and 24. It’s a tribute to
former bandmate Pete Townshend, the
group’s main songwriter.

Townshend and former Who bassist
J ohn Entwistle are expected to
perform at the shows. But Daltrey,
whose birthday is March 1, said fans
should not expect a Who reunion
anytime soon.

“It’s not down to me, it’s down to
Pete,” Daltrey said Friday in a
telephone news conference from New
York. “If I had my way, we’d do it. I
don’t talk to Pete about it anymore.”
