I Pete Townshend and Eddie
Vedder at the House of Blues
on July 29: I thought Pete Town-
shend, what with his mangled ear-
drums, had sworn off electric gut
tars forever. But when this
“acoustic” show went electric. and
Townshend unleashed the distor-
tion and windmills for “Won’t Get
Fooled Again,” it was a moment
not to be missed. Vedder‘s
entrance was equally delightful;
the whole time, Kid Pearl Jam
beamed like he was a batboy at
fantasy baseball camp getting a
chance to play catch with Mickey
Mantle. But this was no mere idol
worship; Vedder and Townshend
teamed up like a rock ’n' roll
father and son, delivering a heart-
felt set that was long on passion.
short on pretense.
