BLUEGRASS ‘TOMMY’
COMIN G TO LAKE
WORTH

Forty-seven years after its
original release, “Tommy,”
the Who’s classic rock a1-
bum, has been fully realized
as a full-length bluegrass
tribute by The HillBenders,
a group from Springfield,
Missouri.

Conceived and produced
by SXSW co-founder and
longtime musician/pro-
ducer Louis J ay Meyers, his
vision brings a new perspec-
tive to “Tommy” while pay-
ing respect to its creators.

Otigmafly composed by
guitarist Pete Townshend as
a rock opera that tells the
st01y about a deaf, dumb
and blind boy, the original
album has sold 20 million
copies and has been in-
ducted into the Grammy
Hall of Fame.

In 2003, Rolling S tone
magazine ranked “Tommy”
No. 96 on its list of the 500
greatest albums of all time.

Meyers had been looking
for the right band to pull off
this bluegrass to the rock
opera until he found The

HillBenders, which are
one of the few bluegrass
groups that are able to
bridge the gap between
the pop and bluegrass
music.

VVlth banj 0, dobro, man-
dolin, bass and guitar, the
group brings the same
energy and Vision to
“Tommy” as The Who did
with a full rock band and
orchestra.

The live performance is
a 75-minute show cov-
ering the original album
from staIt to finish with
audience participation.
