1966 – The Who play the Astoria Cinema in Finsbury Park, North London. The supporting acts are Screamin’ Lord Sutch & the Savages, the Merseys, the Fortunes and the Graham Bond Organization.
1967 – John now has his chance to do blind ratings of singles in Melody Maker. Without knowing the artists he rates new records by Donovan, Petula Clark and Herman’s Hermits. On the same day New Musical Express prints the article: “Who are mellower fellows now”. It’s an interview with Keith.
1967 – The Who play the Birdcage Club in Portsmouth, Hampshire
1967 – Billboard notes The Rovin’ Kind’s cover of “My Generation” as a new release it picks for the Top 100 (it does not chart)
1969 – Kit Lambert brings in the Guardian’s rock critic Nik Cohn to listen to rehearsals of the song “Pinball Wizard” inspired by his love for the table-top game. Accompanying him is the young woman who is the subject of his book Arfur: Teenage Pinball Queen.
1973 – Keith and Viv Stanshall are last minute replacement performers at the Lanchester Arts Festival. Backed by Nigerian musician Gaspar Lawal and support band Necromandus, the duo perform wholly improvised noise as the angry audience boos and demands refunds.
1981 – The Who play the Rainbow Theatre in London as a benefit for Erin Pizzey’s Chiswick Family Rescue Organization that shelters battered wives.
1986 – Roger appears on an MTV special about the making of the film Quicksilver Lightning. Roger sings the title song.
2003 – The soundtrack to Shanghai Knights is released with both “Magic Bus” and “My Generation” by The Who
2006 – e Townshend posts one of the last chapters of his blog novella The Boy Who Heard Music. The climax takes place at a benefit concert for a New York rocked by terrorist attacks. Pete says in the comments section that he wrote this in 2000 and handed it in to his publishers a year before September 11. “The bombings I write about were meant to be London style bombings I imagined might one day come to NY. This was not prescience: after all terrorists had already tried – I think I was in NY when the car bombs went off underneath the building. After the bigger tragedy I thought about taking this part out of the story, but I included it without much modification.”
2010 – e and Roger perform acoustic at a media presentation in preparation for their Super Bowl appearance with The Who
2013 – Pete Townshend posts a blog on Huffington Post. The subject is his dual personality; the person who worries about the world and the performer where a “battle commences for ownership of the boards.”
